Calendula (Calendula officinalis)

Varieties: Alpha

Uses: edible petals / natural food dye / herbal medicine (tinctures, balms, etc)

Planting: Direct seed in the spring after last frost. Plant 6”-12” apart, 1/4”-1/2” deep, and seeds will germinate in about a week.

Cosmos, Sulphur (Cosmos sulphureus)

Varieties: Mona’s Orange

Uses: edible, but bitter petals / natural dye / cut flowers / pollinator plantings

Planting: Sulphur Cosmos do best in full sun. Start indoors 6 weeks before last frost for longest bloom time, otherwise direct seed once soil temperatures reach 65 degrees. Lightly cover seeds, which will germinate in 7-21 days. Space 18”-24” apart. This variety grows up to 6 ft tall!

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus)

Varieties: Hopi Black Dye Sunflower, Tarahumara White Seeded Sunflower

Uses: edible seeds (both varieties) / natural food dye (Hopi Black Dye Sunflower)

Planting: Sunflowers prefer direct sun, but tolerate light shade. Direct seed 6” apart, 1/2” deep after danger of frost has past. Space rows 24”-36” apart. Seeds germinate in 10-14 days. Tall plants may require some support.
